[MOVING TOWARDS GREATER SAFETY]
Safety Performance Dashboard
QUANTIFY RISKS // PREVENT CRASHES // OPTIMIZE INFRASTRUCTURE
Roadscor integrates conflict probability, controllability, severity and costs for Safety Performance Indicators (SPIs) for any road segment – including complex intersections. These metrics quantify design performance before accidents occur, shifting safety management from reactive to proactive.
Roadscor runs on two key engines:
- Conflict Analysis Engine: determines the conflicts on the road segment, both colissions and near-misses, with their respective probability (expected frequency based on simulated traffic demand and exposure) and controllablity (the likelihood a competent road user can successfully avoid a conflict).
- Risk Score Engine: converts the conflicts to severity probabilities (potential human consequences derived from biomechanical injury analysis) and the associated societal costs.
Based on the results of the engines, Roadscor produces a safety dashboard, with key metrics to justify investments and compare designs:
- Heatmap: an overview of the road segment with the locations of the conflicts and their severity – each conflict is visualized by video.
- Risk-matrix: a three dimensional, filterable graphical overview of the conflicts according to their probability, controllability and severity.
- Conflict-breakdown: a bar-chart showing the total number of conflicts per road user.
- Risk Sigma: An aggregate score for the design of the road segment to compare alternatives.
- Costs Sigma: Safety outcomes expressed as monetary impacts in local currency.
Developed and validated through the EIT Urban Mobility ROADSCOR project, our framework provides a consistent audit trail. This enables authorities to move beyond assumptions and justify infrastructure improvements based on measurable, defensible safety outcomes.
