The N286 at Steenbergseweg is a high-speed rural junction where heavy agricultural machinery and through-traffic intersect with vulnerable road users. Despite the low-density environment, large speed differentials and red-light violations create high-energy conflict zones. Roadscor quantified the intersection’s safety performance by utilizing smart traffic-light data (iVRI). This demonstrated Roadscor’s ability to deliver high-fidelity risk assessments even in regions where traditional crash datasets are limited.

Data-Driven Signal Optimization

The analysis benchmarked the existing signal layout against a proposed design featuring adjusted timings and enhanced crossings. This provided the Province of Noord-Brabant and SmartwayZ.NL with measurable safety outcomes:

  • nb167% Overall Risk Reduction: The simulation validated that the proposed modifications would significantly decrease the total frequency of potential conflicts.
  • NB2Identification of Residual Fatal Risk: While the total number of incidents dropped, the analysis revealed a relative increase in the risk of fatal outcomes linked to specific signal clearance times.
  • NB3Optimized Implementation: These insights are currently steering the final optimization of signal phasing and clearance intervals, ensuring the redesign maximizes safety before physical implementation.

The Result

By leveraging existing infrastructure data, Roadscor provided a transparent, evidence-based audit for rural road safety. This methodology allows authorities to move beyond generic speed-calming measures and implement precise, data-backed signal adjustments that protect all road users.
